Ambrosius Holbein

Ambrosius Holbein

The son of Hans Holbein the Elder and brother of Hans Holbein the Younger came to Basel in 1515, where he joined the painters' guild in 1517 and acquired citizenship in 1518. Since no further references are known from the same year, it is assumed that he died during 1518 - at the age of 25 years. Although the artist left only a few paintings, he is the creator of an extensive graphic oeuvre, which includes numerous illustrations, most of which were commissioned by the book printing trade.
