It is natural for a painting of such considerable age to undergo age-related changes over the centuries. This created a craquelure – a network of fine cracks that widened into crater-like furrows as a result of repeated sharp cleaning. Almost 100 years ago, these were covered with coarse, heavily darkened retouching, giving the Madonna of the Grapes an unsightly, spotty structure.
