Johann Heinrich Hurter

Johann Heinrich Hurter

After Hurter had failed to make a living in Bern, Paris or The Hague, he settled in London in 1777, where he  established  himself as a miniaturist and rose to become the royal court painter. In addition to his painting, he ran a workshop for the making of scientific instruments. He was known not only for his portrait miniatures taken from nature, but also for enamel minitaures  based on the works of old masters. He described his method of making copies in enamel painting in a publication that appeared in The Hague in 1776.
