Johann Jacob Schärer

Johann Jacob Schärer

In 1781 he started an apprenticeship as a stucco worker with Höscheller in Schaffhausen. His journeyman years took him to Munich, where he studied painting. Only a few of the numerous works by this prolific and successful artist have survived. A magnificent ceiling for the Haus zur Grosse Kante (Schaffhausen, 1694), portraits for the Solothurn Wagner family, a magnificent ceiling and five oil paintings for the main council chamber (Zurich City Hall), stucco work for St. Johann (Schaffhausen, 1733) and for the Brugg town church (1734–1740) with stucco decorations.
